So you’ve just managed to get level seventy and you’ve got some decent gear on your toon. The next logical step is either PvP or going the PvE route which includes raiding. However, before you even sniff an application for a raiding guild you’re going to have to get yourself keyed for Karazhan. The process isn’t difficult, but you’re going to have to put some time into it and unless you’re going through the process with some familiar faces, you’re probably going to run into a bit of trouble with going into the dungeons for key fragments.
Before you do anything, you’re going to have to make sure you meet a certain number of requirements. One: you have to be able to fly, no way around this. Two: You’re going to need 350 lock picking, a rogue friend or have the key to Arcatraz and Shadow Labyrinth. Three: You need to complete Escape from Durneholde Keep in the Caverns of Time. Setting your home to Shattrath can make things a lot easier.
Once you can do all of these things you’re ready to start. Head over to Deadwind Pass in the Eastern Kingdoms of Azeroth and go to Karazhan. You might run into an opposing raid which can make life difficult if you’re on a PvP server. Once there, you’ll be able to receive two quests which are done in the ruins of the town just in front of the tower. There are stairwells leading underground that are opposite of one another, you’ll have to go down both to complete one of the quests while the other simply requires you to kill the many mobs around the area and loot a number of items from them.
After this, you’ll be sent to Dalaran to speak to an Archmage who is located north of the giant bubble surrounding Dalaran. After you speak to the Archmage you’ll be traveling all the way back to Shattrath. Khadgar will send you to Shadow Labyrinth, which is a five-man level 70 instance. While the instance isn’t entirely difficult, a group that doesn’t know how to take care of the bosses will routinely find themselves wiping. The location of the key fragment is at the very end of the instance, which requires you to clear the entire way and then fight the elite that spawns upon opening the container. A stealth run with rogues and druids would an extremely difficult task.
When you return to Khadgar with your key fragment you will receive another quest that sends you to both the Steamvaults of the Coilfang Reservoir and the Arcatraz wing of Tempest Keep. Stealth runs by Rogues and Druids are much more viable but still very difficult. Missing the key fragments during a run is very possible so be sure to keep an eye out on where your party is inside of the instance. For The Steam Vault the container is in a deep pool of water before the first boss-which also spawns a boss. For the Arcatraz keep an eye out for void walkers. Upon seeing them take an immediate right and the container will be in the corner of the room. Again, an elite guard spawns and you’ll have to take it down with a group.
If you manage to ascertain both keys head back to Shattrath and turn in the quest to Khadgar. Khadgar will send you to the Caverns of Time where you will need to speak to Medivh. To speak to him you’ll need to first complete the Black Morass, which is the second instance in the Caverns of Time. This is why you need to have completely Old Hillsbrad beforehand. Upon finishing Black Morass and receiving your key you’ll head back to Khadgar who will send you to Karazhan.
And that’s that, you’ll be able to run Karazhan with whomever you please.
